Summerest is a beautifully-renovated 6-berth cottage located on the peaceful Fisherhead side of lower Robin Hood's Bay. It is ideally positioned to benefit from an open aspect overlooking The Old School House field, bringing light into the cottage. There are 3 delightful bedrooms, a cosy and comfortable lounge, 6-place dining table and separate fully-fitted kitchen.
Whole-week bookings during the summer holidays are Fri - Fri.
Entrance
Entry into Summerest is directly from the path on Fisherhead. The front door leads initially into a small entrance porch with coat pegs and space for shoes and boots. A further door takes you into the lounge and dining room.
Ground Floor
The sitting room has a calming feel and retains some lovely old features. The beamed ceiling and original stone fireplace & chimney breast are complemented with a more recently added oak floor. The room is furnished with two 2-seater sofas in pale grey, two leather armchairs and an oak dining table with a bench and chairs. There is a well-stocked bookcase, a log-burner and a wall-mounted Smart TV with access to a multitude of channels and streaming platforms. A large serving hatch connects the dining area to the kitchen - very useful when family meals are being served - and there are 2 tall wooden stools there for social interaction between the cook and the non-cooks while food is being prepared.
From the lounge, there are 2 steps up to the fully-equipped and well-stocked kitchen which comprises a dishwasher, gas oven & 4-ring gas hob, an integrated fridge with small freezer compartment, microwave and kettle. The beamed ceiling, terracotta stone floor and muted coastal colours continue the theme. To the rear of the kitchen there is a back door which leads up 10 stone steps to the back of the cottage (see below).
Access to the first floor is by an open staircase with rope and wood hand rails, exposed stone walls and built-in lights at step level. (Please note that both staircases in the cottage are painted rather than carpeted).
First Floor
The first floor comprises 2 carpeted double bedrooms and the shower room.
The first bedroom looks out over Fisherhead and the pantiled rooftops of the lower village and the dual sash windows to the front aspect provide more than enough light. The double bed is crisply dressed with white linen, throws and cushions and there is a bedside table and lamp to either side and an ottoman at the foot of the bed. On the other side of the room is an ornamental old cast iron fireplace and, commonly featured in these cottages, 2 cupboards which are built in to the alcoves and provide storage and hanging space for clothes.
The second bedroom is similarly styled and equally charming and comprises a double bed with bedside table and lamps, a beamed ceiling, original cast-iron fireplace and a built-in wardrobe cupboard.
Between the two bedrooms is a well-appointed shower room with WC and a large tiled walk-in cubicle with a flip-screen and a large rain head shower. There is also a towel radiator and a washbasin with a mirrored cabinet and a vanity light above.
From this landing, a door opens up to the second staircase which takes you up to the third bedroom.....
Second Floor
The whole of this floor is given over to the third bedroom which has sloping beamed ceilings and a calming coastal theme. There are 2 single beds with a bedside cabinet and lamp in between. The two bean bags and wall-mounted Smart TV make this room the perfect chill-out place for older children or a quiet getaway from the crowd and the white painted floor adds to the coastal theme.
There is also a very useful built-in stair gate at the top of the stairs.
Please note that there are no blinds at the windows so this room is perhaps better suited to early risers.
Outside
There is a bench to the front of the cottage - perfectly located to catch the morning sun, to take the air with a coffee and a good book or to simply sit with a glass of wine at the day's end.
To the rear, accessed from the back door up a flight of 10 fairly steep stone steps, is an outbuilding (known locally as a shinney) which houses a washer/dryer and has ample storage space for bikes, wet suits, body boards and suchlike.
General
The overall feeling of Summerest is one of simple elegance combined with a delightfully muted coastal colour scheme. The cottage is well-designed, practical and unfussy and lends itself to a comfortable and relaxing holiday.
