Whitby Regatta 19th-22nd August 2016

Whitby Regatta 19th-22nd August 2016

Whitby Regatta. 19th – 22nd August 2016.

Whitby Regatta is a festival that has been running in the town for 174 years. Originally the regatta started out as rather small affair whereby local fishermen competed in races with their fishing smacks and salmon cobbles, with a prize of 50 guineas to the winner. Whitby’s regatta to this day is one of the largest regattas to take place on the North East Coastline in past years however, now only the Whitby and Scarborough Regattas remain. This year’s regatta takes place between the 19th and 22nd August.

In more recent years the Whitby Regatta has grown into a three-day weekend event that draws in crowds from all over the country. The events that now take place include rowing races, a 4K run, craft fairs and markets, vintage car rallies, beach volleyball, the greasy pole competition, air displays by The Royal Air Force and Red Arrows and much more. During the day and night there are attractions and activities to suit all ages, along with a chance to explore this historical town’s many shop lined cobbled streets and beautiful sea front.

Whilst in Whitby, why not try out some of the local cuisine. There are many different restaurants, cafes and fish and chips shops in the town, offering a variety of different foods. There is something to suit all tastes.

The Whitby Regatta culminates on its final day with the crowning of that years Miss Regatta and a spectacular night time firework display for all the family to enjoy. For further information on Whitby Regatta and its events, go to www.whitbyregatta.co.uk
