Whitby Regatta 2023

Whitby’s famous regatta has been running for more than 180 years and is without a doubt one of the town’s most famous attractions, bringing in huge crowds each year.

The regatta started out with fishermen competing against each other in their fishing smacks and salmon cobbles. After a while came the introduction of yachts. In 1847 “The Whitby Challenge Cup”, promoted by the Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club, was won by the Schooner “Whiled”, and a prize of 50 guineas was awarded to the captain or owner. Up until the nineteen thirties, yacht racing was the main attraction of the Regatta with more events being added over the years.

This year’s regatta will be from the 12th – 14th August. Just a 15 minute drive from Robin Hood’s Bay There will be numerous events, attractions and activities all around the town, culminating in the iconic firework display. Other events include….

The 2 main events are the Red Arrows display which is at 15:10pm on Sunday 13th and the firework display which is 21:45pm on Monday 14th. For a full line up of events, please click here
